Virgin Atlantic Cargo Selects Accelya to Power Transformation

Barcelona, Spain – April 11, 2022

  • Virgin Atlantic Cargo is transforming the infrastructure of its fast-growing business to maintain and grow volumes secured during the pandemic.
  • The airline has chosen FLX Cargo, Accelya’s integrated cargo platform, as the key pillar to deliver its business strategy, underpinned by a relentless focus on commercial and operations optimization.

Accelya, a leading provider of technology solutions to the travel industry, today announced that it has been selected to power the digital transformation of one of the world’s fastest-growing airlines, Virgin Atlantic Cargo. The airline is transforming its technology infrastructure to maintain and grow volume secured during the pandemic.

As a result of this agreement Virgin Atlantic Cargo is updating its enterprise-wide cargo management platform, dubbed ‘Voyager’, with Accelya’s FLX Cargo Platform. The objective is to deliver a differentiated product offering and an enhanced customer experience.

The FLX Cargo Platform will provide the airline with greater commercial and operational control, including command over its distribution channels. As a result, Virgin Atlantic Cargo can provide superior experience and value to its growing customer base, enabling the airline to deliver its brand promise.

The integrated Accelya FLX Cargo Platform digitizes every aspect of the cargo process from offer to settlement. The airline will leverage this platform to create, optimize and distribute offers, manage the order lifecycle, and deliver network wide and ULD operations.

“Virgin Atlantic Cargo is an inspiring example of a smart-thinking airline that drove overall profitability through the pandemic with cargo,” said Bryan Porter, SVP Global Sales and Account Management at Accelya. “We are pleased to support the airline’s ongoing transformation to continue to grow and provide a market-leading cargo service.”

“As we emerge from the pandemic, technology-based evolution is at the core of our journey to becoming the most loved cargo airline. The very latest version of Accelya’s FLX Cargo Platform will enable a step change in aiding our customers to connect anytime, anywhere and via any channel. The platform allows us to create new capabilities from which we will continually improve and advance our services and our digital proposition. Our teams are already well advanced on their path to an early 2023 implementation of the first in a series of exciting new developments and features.” added Phil Wardlaw, Managing Director at Virgin Atlantic Cargo. “Given our longstanding relationship with Accelya and their expertise in cargo technology solutions, they are the natural choice as a technology partner. The investment and development in the FLX platform are impressive and provide the foundations for a significant benefit to us and our customers’ businesses in the years ahead.”

About Virgin Atlantic Cargo

Cargo has been an important part of Virgin Atlantic’s business ever since the airline was founded by entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson 34 years ago. Today, the airline carries over 200 million kilos of cargo annually and, with a strong commitment to innovation and customer service at its core, Virgin Atlantic Cargo is recognised as one of the world’s most customer-focused and service-oriented airlines.

The airline has played a vital role keeping global supply chains running and transporting essential goods around the world during the global Covid-19 pandemic – reengineering into a successful freight only operation offering cargo-only services and charters for the first time in its history.  Virgin Atlantic flew its first cargo only flight on 21st March 2020 and has grown and evolved a significant programme of scheduled and charter cargo flying, launching 14 new routes and operating over 4,000 cargo only flights. 2020 also saw Virgin Atlantic Cargo partner with the Department of Health and Social Care and the NHS, operating cargo-only flights from Shanghai, Beijing and Xiamen to London Heathrow bringing over 7 million kilos essential medical equipment, supplies and PPE into the UK.

Virgin Atlantic took delivery of its first Airbus A350-1000 aircraft in 2019 – helping to transform the fleet into one of the quietest and most fuel efficient in the sky. By 2022, the airline will operate a streamlined fleet of 37 twin engine aircraft following the retirement of its 747s and A332s, and its simplified fleet will be 10% more efficient than before the Covid-19 crisis. Alongside Joint Venture partners Delta Air Lines and Air France-KLM Cargo, for four airlines together account for 23% of total trans-Atlantic capacity or more than 600,000 tonnes annually offering cargo customers greater choice than ever before.
